TOM BARIL - BOTANICA Botanica is Tom Baril's second monograph and follows his remarkably successful self-titled book from 1997. Baril, who is responsible for printing the defining black & white works of the late Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1988), carries on his passion for producing exquisite imagery from both behind the camera and from the darkroom. Botanica reproduces sixty of Baril's flora images in a large format design that echoes the scale of his prints and harkens back to the early illustrated books of the nineteenth century and such classic tomes as the now-legendary Urformen der Kunst (1928) by Karl Blossfeldt. Singular in its grandeur and design, Botanica is certain to become a highly collectible book in its own right. |

Tom Baril's elegant floral
photographs build on a long tradition of botanical studies. Baril's
images visually take us to places once visited by nineteenth-century
and modernist practitioners like Adolphe Braun, Man Ray, and Irving
Penn. However, Baril distinguishes his own work from that of his
forebears by solarizing Polaroid film, and using unique toning
techniques. He achieves stunningly beautiful results that are at once
classic and contemporary. "In an age when the medium is becoming more
